Spag-Lo From Graffiti to Fashion

Published On August 23, 2013 | Fashion
“You’re essentially wearing art; fashion is still art, just in a different form,” explained Brooklyn designer, Patrick Spag-Lo, about his approach to designing his clothes. The Flatbush-native, originally a graffiti artist part of the “Intelligent Artists” crew, started creating custom pieces for himself back in ‘01 and now has multiple collections, along with a brick and mortar shop.
A huge part of my interview with Spag showed off his new signature street wear line, Konquer NY. This line has more emphasis on the art of design, where a previous line, “Union Street” was more on the denim tip and was all about the rough and rugged look. What really stands out about this brand is the combination of certain intricate designs. He went on to say that every piece has a name and a story behind it; for example, his piece “American Gangster” which is a crew-neck sweater with a full color American Flag on the torso and camo’ on the sleeves made of leather had an interesting story.

“The American gangster piece has to do with what the country is and has done. It represents the military, the president and the politicians because they’re an organized gang,” he said.
Within the Konquer NY collection, there is a line called “Neighborhood Watch” which consists of hats with the names of the most influential ‘hoods and areas in NYC that are sometimes overlooked or conversely are always in the spotlight. These are areas that have produced cultural changes, as well as large numbers of artists, entertainers and athletes.
We also spoke about his movement “F*uck Fashion Week” which addresses the fact that fashion should be every week, not just one week out of the year. Also bringing up the point that Fashion Week is no longer for the public but for the upper echelon of society. “It was a form of activism, if you are really apart of fashion you won’t dedicate a single week to it, it’s your life and that’s how F*ck Fashion Week came about,” he said.
The movement has been receiving a great amount of support, mostly by the independent designers and stylists who Spag said are the intended demographic. When asked about the hiatus that has been put on Fashion’s Night Out, Spag is more than pleased that it is not being brought back as of yet. Being as he said is that it brought more light to the fact that Fashion Week is no longer for the general public.
In closing of the interview, Spag had mentioned that he does in fact have something big planned for Fashion Week this September, Pro Bono of course! Although at the moment he does not have an online website, which will be releasing in the first week of September, he does have a webstore, but you can follow his exploits via his blog by clicking here.

Coming in STRONG at #16 is Patrick ‘SPAG-LO’co owner of  “THE WAGON” Boutique in the VERY chic Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights. Born & raised in Brooklyn, Spag-Lo is a bonafide Ralph Lauren POLO connosieur and Street Fashion fanatic. He teamed up with Felisha Noel, Julius Benn to launch THE WAGON boutique– their slogan being: “the home of classic apparel”. And it’s oh-so true! Their fashions are rare, well-crafted, highly coveted pieces that would make even the most fashion-forward person do a triple-take. Check out Spag in his own words:
[The Wagon] Specializes in contemporary, streetwear, European & Vintage clothing. Positioned as a BUYER, I’m always searching for new trends & brands. Consistantly recreating & revisiting the old-school to make it relevant. The past, present, and the future equals Classic & fashion forward. That’s me!
Ya damn right Spag… Ya damn right.
We went on-location to Spag-Lo’s store in Brooklyn to shoot him. We had fun listening to hot tracks, and oggling the even-hotter pieces and rare items his store had to offer. Check it out:
